Growth in Motion: An Intern’s Perspective

At EDCi, we love getting to know the bright minds who join us as interns. Today, we are shining a spotlight on Owen, a Software Development Intern, here at EDCi. Get an inside look at Owen’s passions and experiences that have made his time at EDCi so rewarding.
So, what first sparked your interest in technology?
Like many tech enthusiasts, it all started with video games. Minecraft Redstone was a big one. That curiosity led to a silly little browser, blocking coding sites and before long, robotics entered the picture – further bringing me towards coding and solving problems.
Tell us a bit about yourself outside of work. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Outside of the office, I’m usually hanging out with friends. We’re big fans of Dungeons & Dragons. I also spend a lot of time playing video games, which, as I mentioned above, is both a hobby and a source of inspiration for my interest in tech.
What are you planning to go to school for?
I’m planning to pursue a degree in computer science, although I’m still exploring which direction I want to take within the field. That’s actually one of the reasons I joined EDCi: to get hands-on experience and figure out what areas of tech I’m most interested in. I'm very thankful for the opportunity I was given and am looking forward to everything I can take away from this position.
How has your experience at EDCi been so far?
It’s been very interesting so far. During my short time here, I’ve had the opportunity to learn quite a lot. There’s so much knowledge here, and everyone is willing to share it. The team here is not only incredibly smart, but fun to be around. There is a great balance of productivity and fun - everyone jokes around and laughs and still gets their jobs done. It’s a good environment – even on the busiest days.
Have you learned anything new or exciting during your internship?
Absolutely. I’ve been working on practice projects that have helped me become more comfortable with C# and APIs, two core tools in software development. I really enjoy coding and learning about code. Every day brings something new to learn, and that’s what keeps it exciting.
Any advice for students looking to break into tech or land an internship?
Build connections. Whether it’s through family, school, or networking events, having people you can reach out to makes a huge difference. I’ve been lucky to have connections through my dad and others in the industry. Just a few emails can open a lot of doors. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
